Is accountability ancient history?

Hebrews 10:24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works

Slap bracelets: fad item in the late 80’s early 90’s that was band in schools because the metal bracelet would cut the wrist of the children wearing them.

Pogs: fad in the 90’s that most people never played correctly.

Accountability: practice of the early church (Heb. 10:24); fad promoted heavily by most churches at the turn of the century.  Men being encouraged to meet with other men; women with other women to discuss spiritual growth and struggles.

You might think it is weird for me to call accountability a fad but when was the last time your leadership encouraged you to not only be apart of a smaller group, but encouraged you to seek out a person with whom you are 100% transparent. To stir up one another in love and good works?    When was the last time they shared how beneficial it was for them to meet with their accountability partner and how much they have grown from it?  If you’re leadership is not doing that consistently, I am positive that nobody else is!

Please don’t mis-understand me, I’m not trying to point anybody out or revive the accountability fad of 10 years ago.  I am simply saying four days ago I stopped listening to the voice that said there was nobody out their on your level to keep you interested or accountable.  That it really was ok for me to share my struggles with another man so that he can check up on me in my fight against sin.

Here are a few Accountability Myths:

They must be at my exact level.
They must be around my age.
They must be similar to my dynamic. (job type, family size, etc)
They must share common interest.

The church is a body made up of different parts.  If you are waiting for a body part to come to your church that is exactly like you it will be too late.  More than likely that body part will be replacing you.

Leaders we must encourage others to have accountability.  If not, we will continue to do emergency maintenance instead of preventive maintenance!
